Our comprehensive range of INA and FAG products for hydraulic systems and fluid pumps is consolidated in the Fluid Technology sector. Bearings and components for these demanding applications must be extremely reliable and efficient. The Fluid Technology sector primarily meets these requirements by developing customized solutions, or, in some cases, by using sophisticated standard components.

Industrial gearboxes are becoming smaller, their performance however, is increasing all the time. The high performance density is a real challenge for the rolling bearings involved. They must be reliable and durable, compact and have high load ratings. Low friction values, quiet running as well as simple and safe installation are also required.

The energy provided by the sun every day is equivalent to the world’s entire annual energy requirements. This energy is unlimited, environmentally-friendly and free of charge. Due to the rising pressure caused by climate change, an increasing number of countries are now using the sun as a source of energy for generating electricity with a view to further decreasing damaging CO₂ emissions. With its large product range and special expertise in materials, coatings and seals, Schaeffler Group Industrial is an important development partner and supplier for a whole series of current projects.

The customer is a leading power generating company in Germany and Europe. Challenge for Schaeffler: Air preheaters in a power plant are used for preheating the air needed for the combustion process. If a preheater fails due to technical problems, that often means that the entire power plant unit has to be shut down. The air preheater is supported in a spherical roller thrust bearing. In the case in hand, this bearing was so badly worn that one of two power plant units had to be shut down. As a consequence the production was reduced by 50 percent. The bearing had to be reconditioned immediately.

Conventional cylindrical roller bearings are proven components that have been used in gearboxes as well as machines and equipment for decades now. However, modern assemblies call for more compact designs with increased performance requirements. It is here that conventional full-complement bearings and cylindrical roller bearings with standard cages often reach their limits, and unwanted compromises must often be made when parts for the application are designed. INA has changed all that by combining the high static and dynamic load ratings of a full complement bearing with the high limiting speeds of a cage guided bearing. The result of this revolutionary development: The low-friction cylindrical roller bearings, series LSL and ZSL.

The high performance density of many modern machines places enormous demands on the rolling bearings used; these often exceed the capabilities of conventional designs of bearings, necessitating early and frequent replacement. In such machines bearings with high limiting speeds even under high radial loads are required. In general, convential cylindrical roller bearings cannot meet these requirements. INA has developed two new types of cylindrical roller bearing – series LSL with a disc cage and series ZSL with plastic spacers between the rollers – which can fulfil the requirements.

Modern gearboxes have hardened and ground gear teeth. The materials are used to the limits of their capacity which are continually being improved by further development. For this reason gearboxes have become incrasingly small over recent years.
